Welcome to Speaking UP BC (Canada)

What does it take to be an advocate?

To put it quite simply…

You need to look at the pile of horse shit in front of you, view it as fertilizer, and then get to work. Oh…and be willing to fall ass backwards into it.

To all of the other parents who also make the decision to step into the advocacy role, however big or small, I cherish you. No one can ever make a difference, truly alone. We walk this together, even when we are fighting our own battles. And, it certainly can feel like a battle sometimes in these strategically designed systems.

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito.” African proverb quoted by the Dalai Lama

Disclaimer: On this website are some general tips that I have learnt along the way that I wish I knew before I started down the advocacy path. I offer these as suggestions for you to consider for your own advocacy efforts. As a disclaimer: please see this list as a Sunday brunch buffet of options and not a prescription of exact steps that you need to follow. I hope this information empowers parents when moving forward to reflect on their own values and make their own advocacy decisions. I know for myself, that when I move down a path that aligns with my values, I feel that much stronger.

“Sometimes it is the people no one can imagine anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” ― Alan Turing

School transitions are upon us. It's always good t School transitions are upon us. It's always good to remind ourselves about the concept of Meaningful Inquiry. And what is that?
Well let me tell you what this beautifulness is.
Parent(s) don't even need to use the word accommodations when they communicate to their child's school in order for the school to be responsible to offer them.
All parent(s)/guardians need to do is communicate to the school that their child is struggling and that this struggle is connected to their disability.
That will trigger the school to now need to investigate if they should and could be offering reasonable accommodations to decrease the harm the student experiencing.
If you have a child with Generalized Anxeity Disorder, get your doctors letters into the school and your child will be protected under the Human Rights Code.
Meaningful Inquiry comes from this case:
Student (by Parent) v. School District 2023 BCHRT 237
There are a lot of other gems in this case that I have noted from this case here
https://www.speakingupbc.com/meaningful-inquiry-anxiety.../
Other gems include:
Showing that you don't need a designation or IEP to be protected under the Code
Defining self-advocacy and expectations for students with disabilities

New Human Rights Decision. I just have to share th New Human Rights Decision. I just have to share this one.
Exclusion case & Indigenous rights.
This case is LOADED with excellent learning and advocacy for all of us. The self-represented parent won, and their case is proceeding.
The respondents use the Ministerial Order as a defence to escape from human rights obligations. The tribunal didn't buy it.
Section 11 appeal is involved in this one too. Connected to the school not labelling the exclusion as a suspension.
I have broken it down.

Did you know that you can have a lawyer represent you, be self-represented AND there is a THIRD option.
It doesn't need to be just you.
